Investing in the future

Driven by significant roading and infrastructure upgrades in Wellington and the surrounding region, Lattey Group has been seeing a surge in business and construction contracts in the capital. With the $2 billion upgrade to State Highway 1 providing a direct line between the Horowhenua district and Wellington city, Levin is the perfect location for a new manufacturing base to service future growth.

Doubling capacity, reducing costs

The 4,500 square metre plant will house six casting beds (there are currently eight in Hastings) and a large pre-stressing area, effectively doubling the company's production capacity. It will allow Lattey Group to supply the Wellington market without having to transport components from Hawke’s Bay, in particular avoiding the costly detour caused by the closure of the Manawatu Gorge.

Hastings still the base

​

Although the Hastings plant has become a barrier to expansion into the lower North Island, it will continue to service Hawke’s Bay and the central North Island. The company has several major projects on its books, including the Napier Airport terminal expansion, the new $19 million Hastings police station, and the new 3,900 square metre Hastings Health Centre.

The plant that built itself

The factory itself will be, as one would expect, made of concrete panels. The first of those will be precast in Hawke’s Bay. As soon as the Levin site reaches production capacity – about halfway through, it will start producing the remaining parts to complete construction. When fully operational, the factory will provide an extra 25 jobs to the local area.
