We’re pleased to welcome Andy Barham to the Lattey Group board as a director and shareholder. Andy takes over from his father Mike, who retired earlier this year.
Andy brings a sound understanding of business management along with plenty of practical, hands-on farming experience. He is well connected in the Hawke’s Bay rural, business and sporting communities. He currently farms sheep and beef in Sherenden on the Napier-Taihape Road.
Andy studied Applied Science (Agriculture), at Massey University. After graduating, he based himself in Feilding to work in the forestry industry for a harvesting and marketing company. He left this role and moved to Hawke’s Bay with his soon-to-be wife Charissa - herself a representative netballer - to play representative rugby, including a stint with the Magpies, before putting rugby on the back burner to start up Peak Fitness in Havelock North in 2004.
The business was a success but after twelve years and three kids, the family’s long-term plan changed. Peak Fitness was sold, a farm was purchased and a return to a rural lifestyle began. Alongside farming, sport has always been an important part of life. Between coaching kids sports teams and playing rugby for Havelock North, Andy also competed in the 2021 Coast to Coast - a 243km rite of passage for multi-sport athletes.
Their farming business did well. They were grateful to come through Cyclone Gabrielle last year with only superficial damage to their property. Others were less fortunate. While farm operations were running smoothly, an old rugby injury became an increasing hindrance, and Andy was eventually forced to undergo hip replacement surgery late last year.
Now back to full fitness, Andy is looking forward to the challenge of being a director and shareholder, studying with the New Zealand Institute of Directors to eventually become registered. Andy brings his unique perspective to the collective decision making at Lattey Group, helping to identify new opportunities and build business resilience.
