Wakefield Hospital - redevelopment well under way

Lattey has now completed their part of the work on $100 million plus re-development project of the Wakefield Hospital in Newtown, Wellington.

The extended hospital will offer access to some of the most advanced medical services and treatment in the country, showcasing the latest medical technologies.

From the onset, this project was an opportunity to provide a purpose-built state-of-the-art facility, including a new complex which will significantly exceed the latest seismic codes.

Lattey's was involved in the early stages of the new build for the existing hospital. Access to the site was challenging due to the high elevation gradient of the site, which had to be excavated – but as usual, nothing our team can't tackle. Up to four-metre deep excavations on a steep hillside were necessary to prepare the site. As with most excavations of this type, a retaining wall had to be build in order to ensure stability.

Lattey was contracted to construct the kingpost retaining wall system, which supports the sub-foundation and basement of the new building. The kingpost wall had to be tied back with grouted anchors to ensure long term stability.

This stage of the project was completed in August 2019, providing a nice strong base to build on. Lattey next installed 80 screw piles that we had custom-designed to meet the client's load requirements. Base sheer isolators were then installed, just like that under the Te Papa building.

Lattey came back to the site in February 2020 to install precast capping beams under the perimeter of the site.

With the first stage of the new build nearing completion, our Civil Team looks forward to getting involved with the second stage or the redevelopment, which should commence later this year.
